Summary of Operating Experience March, 1981

1. As stated in last month's report, an evaluation of possible sources for the loose objects retrieved from the bottom area of the reactor vessel indicated the most likely source to be the reactor coolant pump labyrinth seal ring and mounting bolts. After disassembly, an inspection of the internals of No. 24 pump revealed its labyrinth seal rina to be missing. Tne pump was reassembled utilizing a new thermal barrier as-sembly and the impeller from the pump that was replaced in i 1977. .

Metallographic and radiochemical analysis of several of the retrieved objects indicate that they came from the same original part. On this basis, no otner pumps were dis-assembled for inspection. Further details relating to this event may be found in the LER (81-006/OlT-0) submitted to the NRC on March 16, 1981.

2. Refurbishment of the in-core thimble high pressure seals was accomplished and the interior of the thimbles cleaned and lubricated.
3. The reactor vessel head studs were installed and tensioned.
4. Following completion of repairs to No. 23 low pressure tur-bine rotor, the rotor was balanced and then installed in its frame. Installation of the inner and outer covers was in progress at the end of the report period.
5. The new fan cooler unit replacement cooling coils have all been installed, chemically cleaned and flushed. Installa-tion of the associated service water headers and piping for the motor coolers is continuing.
6. Following closing of the RCS, the system was filled, vented and the temperature raised to approximately 180' for the chemistry hold period. At the end of the report period, the RCS was being held at 425 psig and 180*F awaiting com-plecion of various prerequisites for the system hydrostatic test.
