Dear Sir:

The purpose of this letter is to provide information as required'by the Special Reports section (6.9.2) of the Indian Point' Unit Three (IP3) Technical Spacifications..

Technical Specifications Section 3.14, " Fire Protection and Detection Systems" section D.2.b states that: "The minimum operable instrumentation required in Table 3.14-1 shall be restored-within-14 days or a Special Report shall be prepared and submitted to tho' Commission. pursuant to specifi~ationc 6.9.2.f within the next 30 days outlining the cause_of the malfunction and the plans for restoring the

instrumentation.to operable status."

L- On May 4,-.1992 the south side lower electrical _ tunnel c (elevation 34') detection system #8 was:taken out of service-l -for scheduled modification work that required repositioning L of the detection systems' run of conduit. A fire-watch was L . established in the area. Manual preaction suppression was L available,:if_-needed, for the south side suppression system-via the_ systems deluge valve manual pull station. A-14 day administrative LCO with'special 30 day reporting requirement wasLentered'at-that time expiring on May 18, 1992.

On May 20,'1992' the sauth side lower electrical tunnel (elevation 34') detection system #8 was declared operable, i after modification completion and system retest, and the

! cystem was' returned to service.
