SUMMARY
OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE JULY 1986 Indian Point Unit #3 was synchronized to the bus for a total of 110.3 hours3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
, producing a gross generation of 52,400 MWe for this reporting period.
On July 5, 1986 at 0958 hours0.0111 days
0.266 hours
0.00158 weeks
3.64519e-4 months
, the unit was taken off line in response to decreasing condenser vacuum..The condenser vacuum leak was subsequently found in the flexible expansion joint between low pressure turbine #33 and its associated Main Condenser #31. A repair was made to 'the flexible joint and preparations were made for return to service.
While returning the unit to service with the turbine at synchronous speed and isolated from the bus the control room operators observed indications of turbine vibration and condenser leakage. Control room operators proceeded to secure the unit to a pre-startup condition for further investigation. These investigations determined that a low pressure turbine blade had failed. Because of these findings the plant proceeded to the cold shutdown ' condition and entered an unscheduled turbine maintenance outage in order to perform low pressure turbine repairs.
