SUBJECT:

Waterford 3 SES Docket No. 50-382 ALARA Review of the Gaseous and Liquid Radwaste Systems

Dear Mr. Collins:

The purpose of this letter is to confirm our current position with regards to open item 8322-02. This opea item requests that an ALARA review of the gaseous and liquid radwaste systems be performed against the recommendations of ANS1 N55.4-1979 and 55.6-1979 respectively. Additional information provided by your radiation protection staff (B. Murray and R. Baer) concerning the intent of this item indicates that a small additional effort on our part (approximately four man-days) should be adequate to address this matter. It was also indicated that completion of our evaluation would not be a fuel load restraint, but must be finished prior to exceeding 5% power.

In our letter of May 18 on this matter, (W3P84-1408), we have indicated that extensive ALARA reviews of the entire plant have been conducted. However, in response to this open item and based upon this clarification, LP&L will conduct a re-evaluation of our liquid and gaseous radwaste systems utilizing the ALARA aspects of these ANSI standards. The purpose of our review will be to provide an increased level of operational awareness of potential areas of radiological concern with our liquid and gaseous waste systems.

The review will focus primarily upon the as-built condition of these systems with particular emphasis upon operations and maintenance aspects as they relate to the requirements of these ANSI standards.
