SUBJECT:

Open Item #8322-02

REFERENCE:

1) Memo Number W3P84-1408; dated May 17, 1984

Dear Mr. Collins:

The purpose of this letter is to confirm our current position with regards to open item 8322-02. This open item requests that an ALARA review of the gaseous and liquid radwaste systems be performed against the recommendations of ANSI N55.4-1979 and N55.6-1979 respectively. Additional discussions with radiation protection staff (B. Murray and R. Baer) concerning the intent of this item indicated that the objective was to increase operational awareness and that the

. level of effort required was relatively small (four nan-days). It was also indicated that completion of our review would not be t fuel load restraint, but should be finished prior to exceeding 5% power.

LP&L will conduct a review of the liquid and gaseous r edwaste systems utilizing the ALARA aspects of ANSI N55.4 and N55.6, prior to exceeding 5% power. 't he review will focus primarily upon the as-built conditiot of these systems with particular emphasis upon operations and maintenance aspects as they relate to the requirements of these ANSI standards.

In conclusion, we are confident that our review will produce information which will benefit our ALARA Program. However, as stated in Raference 1, Waterford 3 has performed extensive ALARA reviews of the entire plant and has taken adequate measures to keep exposures and releases ALARA. Therefore, this additional review of the gaseous and liquid radwaste systems should not be construed as a committ:nent to ANSI N55.4 and N55.6 K. W.
