SUBJECT:

Waterford 3 SES Docket No. 50-382 Independent Design Review of Emergency Feed Water System (EFWS)

Dear Mr. Novak:

Enclosed are copies of the revised program plan, Revision B, 9/13/82 for the Independent Design Review of the Emergency Feed Water System incorporating the change resulting from the Torrey Pines Technology's kickoff meeting on September 10, 1982 held at Waterford 3 site. At this meeting EFWS for Waterford 3 was discussed along with the walkdown of the EFWS. During the walkdown and discussions at the meeting it was pointed out to Torrey Pines Technology that the rooms, housing the motor driven Emergency Feed Water Pumps, are normally ventilated (when EFWS is not operational) by nonsafety duct system which is seismically supported. Whenever the EFWS is operational the non safety duct system is turned off and safety related local room chiller is turned on. The equipment located in the area of the turbine driven Emer-gency Feed Water Pump has been designed to withstand the elevated temperatures resulting from the 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
continuous operation of the turbine driven Emergency Feed Water Pump. *he Emergency Feed Water System is required to operate maxi-mum of only two hours in the hot stand by mode before the shutdown cooling system takes over. Therefore, the technical review will not be of the HVAC system since it has no impact on the EFWS, instead the technical review will include the Emergency Feed Water Pump Room Cooler for the room containing the motor driven Emergency Feed Water Equipment.

Sincerely, e

Dear Kanti:

Enclosed are copies of the revised Progra Plan, Revision B 9/13/82, incorporating the change resulting frcan the TFT kick-off meeting, September 10, 1982. The change is a result of EBASCO representatives informing us that contrary to our previous information on the HVAC system, the HVAC system has no impact on the energency feedwater system.

'lherefore, the technical review will not include the HVAC system, but will include the emergency feedwater punp rom cooler (AH-Air Handler) for one rom containing motor driven EFW equipnent.

In addition to the above, the task F section format was clarified.

It is reccomended that you distribute the revised progran plan to EBASCO and CE representatives and request NRC's review of the change.

I Sincerely,

c. A Frederick D. Carpenter Progem Manager l FDC/dn Encl. , ,
