August 7 and 13, 1987, of selected maintenance and Quality _ Assurance activities

at Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Plant authorized by Operating License No. NPF-43^

and to the. discussion of our findings with Mr. B.4 Ralph Sylvia and others of ,

your staff at the conclusion of the inspection. ,

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies specific _ areas examined  !

during the inspection. Within these areas, the. inspection consisted.of:

observations, interviews with personnel,'and examination of procedures- ,

representative records. .q

During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to'be in violation

of NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Notice._ With respect =to ,

Item 4.b. the inspection showed that action had been taken to correct the- )

identified violation and to prevent recurrence. -Our understanding of'your -

corrective actions is described in Paragraph 4.b.(4)'of the enclosed inspection

report. A reply to Item 4.b is not required. A written response is required 4

for the remaining items. ,

In response to Violation 341/87028-01, include your plans to review and evaluate.

the effect the never performed and past due preventive. maintenance items have- R

on the reliability and operability of the affected systems,-your plans to

reassess-the priorities assigned to the preventive maintenance, items, and :

your plans to layout and implement a program' to reduce -the' preventive  ;

maintenance- backlog to an acceptable level .
