-sAFETYANliENSING January 14, 1981 Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

D. M. Crutchfield, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 5 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 TMI Related Modifications San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 Our January 17, 1980 letter stated that modifications would be made to the radiochemical and chemical analysis laboratory ventilation system to provide clean air to that area so that station personnel can analyze iodine samples.

However, as a result of other TMI recommendations, the capability to analyze these samples will be provided independent of the laboratory.

In-plant samples will be taken using a cart mounted iodine sampler with an attached single channel analyzer (SCA).

The stack samples will either be analyzed using the SCA or the multichannel analyzer (MCA) located in the counting room. Offsite samples will be analyzed using an MCA located in a mobile lab or in the counting room. Therefore, the radiochemical and chemical analysis laboratory modifications are no longer necessary and will not be made.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Very truly yours,
