Dear Mr. Randazza:

SUBJECT:

MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND FAST NEUTRON FLUENCE FOR FRACTURE TOUGHNESS REQUIREMENTS FOR PROTECTION AGAINST PRESSURIZED THERMAL SHOCK EVENTS (10CFR50.61)

By letter dated January 21,.1986, you submitted information on the material properties and the fast neutron fluence of the reactor pressure vessel in compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.61. The staff has reviewed the material properties and chemical composition and found them acceptable.

The staff has also reviewed the fast neutron fluence on the inside surface of the pressure vessel in view of the material properties. We find that the Maine Yankee pressure vessel meets the material toughness requirements of 10 CFR 50.61 to the end of the current operating license on October 21, 2008.

However, we request that you submit periodic future re-evaluations of the RT and the corresponding comparison with the predictions of Reference 1.

Subb3submittals could be made at the same time as the Pressure-Temperature operating limits which are required by 10 CFR 50 Appendix G.

Our Safety Evaluation is Enclosed.

. This request for information was approved by OMB under clearance number 3150-0011 which expires December 30, 1986. Comments on burden and duplication

may be directed to the Office of Management and Budget, Reports Management, i Room 3208, New Executive Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20503.
