A routine radiological controls inspection was conducted by Mr. R. L. Nimitz
i
at the Maine Yankee Power Station on May 7-11, 1990.
The areas reviewed during the inspection are discussed in the enclosed
,
report. The principal focus of the inspection was to review your radiological
controls for the outage. The results of the inspection were discussed with
Mr. E. T. Boulette and other members of your staff on May 11, 1990.
Within the scope of this inspection, no apparent violations were identified.
The observations by the inspector indicated improvement in the radiological
planning and control of outage work activities.
The radiological planning for-
the thermal shield repair was considered of good quality.
.The inspection did identify a need to improve the radiological oversight of
' steam generator work act.ivities.
In addition, there appears to be a need to
improve communications within the station organization _to ensure that worker
concerns are resolved. Also,.it appears'that. radiation protection management
issued a Night Order that superceded approved plant procedures. This matter

is. unresolved and:will be reviewed during a future inspection.
