APPROVAL OF PROPOSED REVISION TO THE CERT!FIED FUEL HANDLER l TRAINING AND RETRAINING PROGRAM FOR THE MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER STATION (TAC NO. MA3804)

Dear Mr. Meisner:

By letter dated August 19,1998, Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company (MYAPC) requested NRC approval of Revision 1 to the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station (MYAPS) Certified Fuel Handler (CFH) Training and Retraining Program. Revision 1 adds two provisions to the CFH training program and changes one title. The first provision ,

allows changes to be implemented to the program without prior NRC approval. The second provision allows certain of the qualified Certified Fuel Handlers to retain their )

qualification as Certified Fuel Handlers without periodic watchstanding and requiring these i individuals to stand watch under instruction prior to resuming independent watchstanding.

MYAPC also requested that the title of " Plant Manager" be changed to " Director of  ;

Operations." 1 The staff has completed its review of Revision 1 to the MYAPS Certified Fuel Handler Training and Retraining Program. The enclosed safety evaluation documents the staff's ,

conclusion that the request is consistent with and meets the intent of the relevant review ]

criteria and is acceptable.
