DAMAGED RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS SHIPMENT

>On June 30, 1999, the licensee notified NRC Region I that on June 29,

>1999, a shipping container loaded with an internally contaminated vacuum

> cleaning device, used at Maine Yankee for asbestos removal, was damaged i

>when the truck hauling the container passed under an overpass on the

> Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90).

The truck driver was not aware that the

> top of the shipping container, a modified sea / land container, had struck

>the overpass, but was notified of the incident by a following truck.

The j

> truck driver then stopped at the Ludlow rest stop near the junction of

>I-90 and I-84 and contacted the licensee. The licensee responded to the

> rest stop and determined that a small gap was opened in the top of the

> container lid.

No radioactive material was released and there was no

> structural damage to the shipping container.

The licensee repaired and

> ealed the small gap in the container lid. The shipping container was

> oversized, and the licensee had obtained a wide load permit for the

>ahipment. The truck will remain at the rest stop until the licensee

> decides whether to return the container to Maine Yankee or send it to the

> original destination, a Westinghouse facility in Pennsylvania.

>The licensee notified the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and

>the Massachusetts' Turnpike Authority. This information is current as of f

f

>11:00 a.m. on June 30, 1999. NRC has notified the Commonwealth of l

> Massachusetts.

Region I Public Affairs is prepared to respond to media

> inquiries.
