Dear Mr. White:

EJordan JGrace Your letters dated July 11, 1979 and December 24, 1980 requested that a common date be established for implementing the inservice inspection program

! requirements of 10 CFR 50.55a(g) at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Unit Nos.

1, 2 and 3. The provisions of 10 CFR 50.55a(g), " Inservice Inspection Requirements", requires that applicable ASME Code components of a boiling water-cooled nuclear power facility meet the requirements set forth in Section XI, Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant components of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Each facility is required by 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(4)(ii) to have an inspection program plan which is updated every ten years to meet the requirements of the latest approved applicable edition and addenda of Section XI in effect 12 months prior to the start of successive 120 month inspection intervals.

You have requested a common implementation date for Browns Ferry Units 1, 2 and 3, (i.e., to have all three units begin 40 month and 20 month inspection periods on the same date), so there will be a single inservice inspection program and implementing procedures for these three basically identical units. It is our understanding that all inspections and tests required to be performed in the third inspection period are, or will be, completed.

We have reviewed your request and find it acceptable. November 1, 1984 is hereby approved as a common start date for all three units for the third 40 month inspection period. Approval is also granted for a start-date of March 1, 1988 for all three units to begin the second 10 year inspection interval. Our related Safety Evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely,

/5/

Daniel R. Muller, Director BWR Project Directorate #2 Division of BWR Licensing
