August 20, 1984 CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED Mr. W. L. Kregloe Pollution Control Engineer State Water Control Board Valley Regional Office 116 North Main Street P. O. Box 268 Bridgewater, Virginia 22812 North Anna Power Station - Oil Spill - August 16, 1984

Dear Mr. Kregloe:

This is to confirm the oil spill that occurred on August 16, 1984 at our North Anna Power Station. This spill was reported by telephone to your office and the National Response Center on the same day.

At 8:53 a.m. on August 16, 1984, station personnel discovered approximately 2 gallons of oil near the first storm drain at the discharge canal. Immediately following discovery of the spill, cleanup efforts began. Oil was contained within the discharge canal and cleaned up by use of absorbent pads and Fiber Pearl.

The oil spill occurred some time prior to discovery while recycling the oil separator. The operator initiated the recycling procedure and left the separator running without informing the next shift of the operating status. Personnel have been instructed to advise the incoming shift supervisor of the status of the oil separator at shift change to avoid a recurrence of this type of incident.

Station biological personnel assisted in the cleanup effort.

These personnel did not observe any adverse environmental impact to fish or other aquatic biota as a result of this spill, and will maintain a close surveillance of the spill area during the next few days.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please let us know.

. ery truly yours, kINh Y A. Taylo'r. h.D.
