Telephone Conversation between J. Eckhardt and B. S. Kaplan on March 20, 1981 (DER 81-5)
Dear Sir:
The NRC was notified of a reportable deficiency in the referenced telephone conversation. At that time, it was estimated that a final report would be available within thirty (30) days.
Due to the extensive investigation and 'evaluation required, an interim report is attached. It is now expected that this information will be finalized by .August, 1981, at which time a complete report will be submitted.
Very truly yours, E. E. Van Brunt, Jr.

PVNGS UNIT 1 I. Potential Problem During installation of the Combustion Engineering (CE) supplied Reactor Coolant Pump Horizontal Support Columns, it was found by Bechtel that the swivel bearing (Item 5 of CE's Drawing E-SYS80-320-054) could not be rotated. This conditon has been raised as a concern by Bechtel because there is a question as to whether the component would be capable of performing its safety related function of providing for the thermal growth between primary loop and the pump casing.
Combustion Engineering's preliminary evaluation was that the condition is not a reportable deficiency. CE indicated that the noted condition of non-rotation may -have resulted from the very close tolerances specified for the bearing and that the component is designed to accommodate much larger loads than that applied by Bechtel during preparations for installation.
II. A roach to and Status of Pro osed Resolution CE is currently investigating this condition and will provide Bechtel with a disposition to this concern.
III. Pro ected Com letion of Corrective Action and Submittal Date of the Final Re ort The actions necessary to coordinate and resolve this condition are expected to be completed within 90 days. A final report will be issued by 8/1/81.
