10 CFR Part 21 Report Revision Master Power Connecting Rod

Dear Sir:

On January 12,1987 Cooper Bessemer Reciprocating Products Division of Cooper Industries reported a potential problem with the master power connecting rod (KSV 2A#1) utilized in Cooper Bessemer "KSV" Emergency Diesel Generators. The report was identified as OCG-3364, and described master rod failure due to an iron plating repair.

On November 3,1994, Commonwealth Edison Company (CECO) Braidwood -Station experienced a master rod failure in the 2B diesel (Engine S/N 7180, Rod S/N 8H2214).

Examination of the master rod indicated a failure mode similar to that described in the 1987 report.

The purpose of this letter is to report additional affected items. A review of in-house records was conducted and identified 4 affected master rods in addition to those reported in 1987. These 4 rods all bear 8H22XX series serial numbers. Due to the manufacturing practices in use in the 70's when these master rods were produced, the affected rods are identifiable by a production order number. The suspect numbers are 106-2, 106-6,106-10, and 106-11.

Cooper recommends that the utilities listed below perform visual inspection of the master rods to determine applicability of this report. This may be conducted in the installed state.

2] Master rods will also bear forging numbers identified with a "CA (i.e.

CA150).
