June ll, 1979 Project Nos. 4391/4392-00 4683/4684-00 Commonwealth Edison Company Byron /Braidwood Stations - Units 1 & 2 NRC IE Bulletin No. 79-04 Correct Weights for Swing Check Valves Manufactured by Velan Valve Corporation Mr. J. T. Westermeier Project Engineer Commonwealth Edison Company P. O. Box 767 Chicago, Illinois 60690

Dear Mr. Westermeier:

In response to your May 3, 1979, request to review the subject bulletin, please be advised that even though the bulletin applies to 1500# swing check valves, we have reviewed all the valves being supplied by Velan Valve Corporation, through both Westinghouse NSSS and Sargent & Lundy specifications.

The following is in response to the five items required by the NRC for the check and globe valves being supplied by '

Velan Valve Corporation:

I. Check Valves

1. The Seismic Category I systems, where Velan Valve Corporation swing check valves are installed, are the Component Cooling (CC) and Boron Thermal 1 Generation (BR) systems. (,,
2. Valve weights, as shown on the drawings, are correct and have been used in the piping analysis. These weights have been verified by Velan Valve Corporation through recalculation and/or actual weighing.

  • Mr. J. T. Westermeier June 11, 1979 Commonwealth Edison Company Page 2 3-5. Not applicable, since valve weights remain unchanged.

II. Globe Valves

1. Velan Valve Corporation globe valves are used widely throughout Seismic Category I systems. The attached list shows the 60 valves per station, which have been identified as showing incorrect weights on the drawing.

The systems affected are the Chemical and Volume Control (CV), Safety Injection (SI), Chilled Water (WO), Essential Service Water (SX), and Auxiliary Feedwater (AF) systems.

2. Correct weights for the globe valves identified were determined by recalculation and/or actual weighing by Velan Valve Corporation and are shown on the attached listing. Applicable drawings have been redistributed showing the corrected weights.
3. The piping systems affected by (higher) valve weights are being evaluated through a final check process using the corrected weights. This final check is normally performed on all Seismic Category I systems using verified equipment'and installation data.
4. Modifications may be required on the piping systems' supports because of the above-described changes in valve weights. In all cases, piping and support stresses will be kept within the allowable limits per Section III.

,

5. Evaluation of the piping and supports is accomplished through using the PIPSYS computer code, which is described in Appendix D.8 of the FSAR.

We trust that the above will enable you to adequately respond to the NRC. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Yours very truly, 1
