to T.E. Murley.
Dear Dr. Murley Reference (a) provided the results of the NRC Region 111 inspection of containment integrated leak rate testing (CILRT) performed at Byron Station Units 1 and 2.
Reference (b) provided the results of the same kind of inspection at Braidwood Unit 1.
Open Items 50-454/86035-02: 456/86022-03 and 456/86023-01 required Commonwealth Edison Company to submit to NRR the justification for performing Type A tests with the leak chase channel plugs installed.
Reference (c) provided that justification for Braidwood Units 1 and 2.
Reference (d) applied that justification to Byron Station Units 1 and 2.
On September 16, 1988, the NRC staff provided comments via a teleconference in regard to reference (d).- At the conclusions of the teleconference additional information was determined to be required by the NRC staff to facilitate their review. Reference (e) provided that information.

Dr'. T.E. Murley May 4, 1990 On November 29, 1988, a second teleconference was held whereby Attachment D to ref erence (e) was discussed. The NRC staff requested that stress calculations be provided regarding the seismic effects on the leak chase channel with a comparison being made to code allowables as given in ASME Section III, Subsection NE.
Attachment A to reference (f) provided SLL calculation 5.2.6.1, Rev. 9 (pages 229 through 241) to address that request.
It is Commonwealth Edison's understanding that the submittals made to the NRC staff have addressed the NRC staff's questions and concerns. To date, Commonwealth Edison has not received any correspondence regarding the result of the NRC staff's review. Byron Station Unit 2 will be entering a refueling outage (B2 R02) September 1 1990 at which time the next CILRT will be performed.
Commonwealth Edison desires that the issues surrounding the performance of the CILRT be resolved prior to the initiation of planning of activities for the Unit 2 CILRT. As a result, Commonwealth Edison requents that the NRC staff complete their reviews and provide their written evaluation by June B, 1990.
Please address any questions or concerns regarding this subject to this office.
Very truly yours,
(. $ w. ~ r b ~ ~.
