Subjectt-Braidwood Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Visit of Soviet Delegation of May 24, 1990 Dear Mr. Delatorrer Commonwealth Edison was pleased to have the Soviet representatives i
1 visit our Braidwood Station to share common nuclear power plant experiences.
l The purpose of this letter is to provide a susunary of items that appeared to L
have impressed the Soviet delegation during the visit and tourt i
The delegation appeared to be impressed by the initial presentation provided by Cosuoonwealth Edison Managers.
Ihis included a short 4
welcome by Mr. C. Reed (Senior Vice President, Nuclear Operations)
I followed by remarks by Mr. R.E. Querlo (Braidwood Station Manager).-
{
Minister Konavslov returned the greeting.
The initial presentation provided the delegation with an overview of e
the Comenonwealth Edison service area and organisation as it relates to Braidwood Station.- It also included the current unit status and some of the Station milestones. ' The pace of the presentation was slow as a result of speaking through an interpreter, how.,ver everything appeared to go well.
L The delegation appeared to be very intent listeners but were very
'f actively taking in all the sights (security, therinography, mini-sub, i
etc.) that they could. They all appeared to be well versed on power-plants, very observant and probably understood more english than we-gave them credit Cor. The interpreter comumented that the minister and deputy seemed to like Braidwood Station and spent time conferring on the differences between Braidwood Station and the Soviet plants.
. i j
The individual intareuts varied somewhat but the central theme of questioning seemed
'.o focus on the safety systems and design 3
information.
L These included items such as:
i Why the station '.nas two liesel generators per unit, l
1' l.
How the Emergency Core Cot. ling System (CCCS) trains relate.

Interest in the security area questioned the large number oft e
Guards and the fact that they are subject to regular drills / exercises Cameras and what they were monitoring e
T... delegetion was vety interested in the various technological gadgets ant devices the station has such as The Benthos Minirover MK 1 Underwater Video Robotic System (submarire).
They wanted to know if it could be used fer ultrasonic testing of the reactor vessel as well as other potential uses. Minister Konavolov wanted to know if the submarine was a prototype or available in the market. Prior to leaving, they were'provided with the Benthos specification data sheet.
- The Swedish manufactured Agenda Model 470 Thermographic Camera.
e Questions vers asked concerning portability, limits of accuracy,
,useful temperature range, and useable distance.
They were provided with two copies of the operating manual.
In touring the Technical Support Center (TSC), considerable interest was shown in the modeling and use of the computars, the dedicated phone system, the use of the TSC durfag a Generating Station Emergency Plan (GSEP) event, the ratius of ths. Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) and prevailing winds.
Pased on their questions, it appeared that they were very knowl'sdgeablo.
They also liked the size of the TSC.
'One of the. visitors asked how the stat. ion goes about permoting professionalism. Discussions were held on the various department codes of ethics,- recognition programs, etc.
