Philadelphia Electric Company 2301 Market Street P.O. Box 8699 Mtiladelphia, PA 19101 Attention: Mr. W.B. Willsey Director - Environmental Affairs Re: Use of Brcxninated Salts in l Condenser Cooling Water.

Gentlemen:

This will respond to your June 12, 1985 letter which provided additional infor-mation regarding the use of brominated salts (such as NA100 Acti-Brom 1338 and Water Science Activox) at ycor Company's Cromby, Eddystone, Delaware, Southwark and Schuylkill Gcuerating Stations.

4 Based upon our review we wish to advise that we have no objection to the use of l

brominated salts in the condenser cooling water at the aforementioned Generating Stations.

It will be necessary to limit tL Free Available Chlorine and the Total Residual l Oxidant in the condenser cooling water discharge in accordance with the NPDES I permit requirements. Your letter notes that the discharge li2 nit of 0.2 mg/l of

Total Residual Oxidant in once through cooling water is limited for each

[ generating unit to only two hours per day. Please note that the requirement

! does not represent an average analysis made over the two hour period of time but rather represents an instantaneous maximum value.

If you have any further questions, please contact me.

! Ve truly yours, OS A. FBOIA Regional Water Quality Manager cc: Donald Knorr Permits Section Re 30 1W170.3 i
