May 1,1995 Mr. Sohan Garg Department of Environmental Resources Bureau of Water Quality Management ^

Lee Park, Suite 6010 555 North Lane Conshohocken, PA 19428

Dear Mr. Garg:

Subject:

Limerick Generating Station NPDES Permit No. PA0051926 The following information is being provided as per your request:

1) An updated flow diagram is enclosed.
2) There are 4 waterboxes and 4 circulating water pumps per generating unit. Each waterbox has a volume of 80,000 gallons. The duration of the drain down is approximately 4 hours4.62963e-5 days
0.00111 hours
6.613757e-6 weeks
1.522e-6 months
per waterbox.
2) The oil / water separators shown on the diagram are currently not part of the condenser waterbox drain down flow path. The separators receive water from miscellaneous plant equipment drains, including the circulating water pump drains. The drain system discharges to the separators as a t preventive measure in the event that oil finds its way into the drain ;

system.

3) The effluent from the waterboxes is discharged via gravity to outfalls 003 and 005.
4) Prior to shutting down the circulating water system, a sarhple of a waterbox effluent will be taken from a pump drain line. Once the sample is obtained, the pumps will be shut down, and draining of the waterboxes will commence. The sample will be analyzed for TSS, TRO, copper, zinc, phosphorus, and pH. In addition, the sample will be analyzed for Hydrothol 191, Betz 3625, and Clam-Trol CT-1, if any of the additives are being used.
5) As previously requested for outfalls 003 and 005 (letter from R. M. Matty to S. Garg dated February 2,1995), flow will be estimated based on the volume of the waterboxes and the duration of the drain down.

6) Temperature will continue to be measured by immersion stabilization at outfalls 003 and 005 (versus the internal point). This will be done to insure that the temperature of the effluent being discharged is accurately recorded and reported.
7) It is important to note that the effiuent from the waterboxes is exactly the

, same water that is discharged from outfall 001 as cooling tower blowdown. Sampling and analyses of outfall 001 effluent is performed weekly. Therefore, we believe sufficient data on the water quality exists.

A copy of this letter (including any attachments or enclosures) is being sent to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) in accordance with the Limerick Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, Environmental Protection Plan, Section 3.2, which stipulates that USNRC shall receive a copy of any proposed changes to the NPDES permit at the same time that the permitting agency is notified.

If you have any questions or require additionalinformation, please contact me at (215) 841-5177.

Sincerely, 0 *r 4 Robert M. Matty, r.
