Dear _ Mr. Wigginton:
Per our State Discharge Pemit No. 'Ik-DP-0187A and NPDES No. MD0002399, please find the follow-up information on an inadvertant discharge in non-compliance with our discharge permit. The noncompliance was reported to Ms. Debby Ford of your office on August 2h,1981.
At 1330 on 8-10-B1 during normal operation, the outside operator &iscovered a leakage past a drain valve for #12 Waste Neutralization Tank (WNT). The leakage was estimated at one (1) Epm. Attempts to seat the valve failed.
The #12 kTT level was five feet and the pH vas tested at 1.8.
The liquid was neutralized with dilute Sodium Rrdroxide (5%) at 1515 and discharged in accordance with permit regulations. The regeneration vaste leakage was discharged to the bay via the WNT drain valve without enauring compliance.
4 The kHT drain valve was removed and inspected on 8-11-81.
The cause of the noncompliance was round to be a damaged sent of the WNT drain valve. _ The
-(
immediate problem was corrected by replacing the valve with a duplicate of the original. The suitability of the specified WNT drain valve is being investigated for possible revision.
The estimated 105 gallons of vastewater over a period of about 105 minutes was introduced to circulation water of 105,000,000 gallone. Following the discharge into the Chesapeake Bay, the pH vould have increased very rapidly to within the ambient range of the bey as a result of rapid mixing and dilution. Thus, there was no measurable impac. on the environment resulting from this discharge.
If you need additienal information, please contar me.
