Dear Mr. Reahl:

RE: NPDES Permit Special Conditions A.2. Noncompliance July 21,1994 NPDES Discharae Permit MD0002399A. State Permit 86-DP-0187A On July 20,1994 at 2:45 PM, during a routine surveillance of the continuous monitoring equipment required by the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant site NPDES permit, the plant intake embayment instrumentation probe was found to be not functioning. During this time period there was no indication of noncompliance with any effluent limitations.

The measuring equipment was out of service for an undetermined amount of time but less than 6 hours6.944444e-5 days
0.00167 hours
9.920635e-6 weeks
2.283e-6 months
before discovery. The cause of the equipment failure was saltwater leakage and subsequent damage to the measunng probe internals. This equipment was replaced with new equipment on July 22,1994. The installation of this new monitoring equipment should resc8ve our continuous monitoring problems. As a compensatory measure, oxygen, salinity and ;emperature measurements were taken on the plant intake embayment every four hours until the new continuous monitoring equipment was installed and returned to service.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact James Szymkowiak at (410) 260-4020.

Sincerely,
