Dear Mr. Reahl:

RE: NPDES Permit Intake Embayment July 6,1994 -

Discharge Permit MD0002399, State Permit 92-DP-0187 On July 6.1994, during routine surveillance of efDuent monitoring for the intake embayment, the salinity meter was found out of service. The salinity monitoring requirements require 1 continuous monitoring with no specifications. !

On July 5,1994, reusine maintenance was perforri[ed which included cleaning the conductivity cell. The salinity cell was returned to 'ervice s after maintenance. Therefore, it was deterrained that tne saiittity meter was out of service less than 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
.

Once per four hours grab sampling frequency was initiated as of July 6,1994 at 7:00 a.m. as required supplemental action and was discontinued when the salinity meter was returned to service on July 7,1994 at 8:20 a.m.

The cause of the malfunction was determined to be that the salinity meter developed a water leak in the monitoring probe which was subsequently repaired. To reduce further reoccurrences of intake embayment monitoring failures, BGE is replacing the current monitoring equipment and the surveillance frequency has been increased until the new equipment is declared in senice.
