Dear Mr. Beasley,

In accordance with the Calvert Cliffs ITIVES permit we are providity written notification of a fish impingement event at the Calvert Cliffs Ifuclear Ituer Plant on February 23, 1989. Prior notification was given by telephone on February 23,1989 (M.J. Wieland, M&E, to J.

Beasley, !!DE) . The event occurred at 6:16 hM at Unit 2. At this j

time, the Unit was us3ng all six circulation water pumps. A large '

number of impinged fish affecting minly two of the travelity screens (one broke a shear pin) required the shutdown of one of the circulating water punps. Power was reduced. Af ter 9:00 N1 numbers of impinged fish had drrpped significantly. The Unit was brought back to ,

normal operation by 9:20 AM and up to full power at 11:15 Nf.

liinety-nine percent of the fish impiryed were Atlantic menhaden (Bruvoortia tyrannus). A small number of other species were also impinged includity spot (1elostomus xanthurus) ard silversides I (Menidia spp.). The episcde was Irwestigated by' an Academy of flatural '

Sciences biologist. There were no dead observed in the embayment area. 'Ihe fish captured at Unit 2 appeatrd to be in good oordition.

On the morning of the' event, winds were blowiry towards the intake area. Waves were breaking over the intake wall. It is believed that two or more large schools of mnhaden swimmily close to the screens i may have been pushed into the screera by heavy wave action. This 1 dea

~

is supported by the fact that only two screens were affected  !

j significantly. Ibad/ dying fish or larger numbers of fish in the '

embayrrant area would likely affect all screens. There has not boen a similar trportable event in previous years of operation.
