NPDES Discharoe Permit MD0002399A. State Permit 86-DP-0187A RE: NPDES Permit Special Condition A3 Noncompliance January 4,1994 On January 4,1994, during a routine surveillance of the continuous monitoririg equipment required by i
the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant site NPDES permit, the plant intake embayment dissolved oxygen i
g instrumentation was found to be damaged. Since this is only a surveillance monitoring requirement, there was no indication of a noncompliance with effluent limitations.
The cause of the malfunction was determined to be a failed oxygen probe. The probe was repaired and ~
l the instrumentation was retumed to service on January 5,1994 at 1200 hrs. The oxygen continuous j
monitoring equipment was out of service for less than twenty four hours. As a compensatory measure, oxygen concentrations were taken on the plant intake embayment every four hours until the continuous monitoring equipment was retumed to service.
Although technically this is not an NPDES permit violation, after consultation with your office, it was drided to submit this as a permit non-compliance. We request your interpretation on this matter to ensure future notifications are proper.
