Dear Honorable lssa,
June 1, 2012 The San Gabriel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce supports the restart of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS}, unit 2. The restart of this vital power generating system is critical to the goal of generating enough uninterrupted energy to the Southern California region. In addition to the need for reliable power, SONGS will also provide an important clean energy source, as opposed to coal and other fossil fuel options if the plant remains closed.
The San Gabriel Valley is a region of Los Angeles straddled and surrounded by the counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange. Situated in the middle of the Southern California area, without a close renewable energy station, the San Gabriel Val-ley, its residents and businesses, become dependent on providers to develop and deliver reliable power for its customers.
With SONGS being out of operations, our region's providers have had to rely on other generators straining a system already at its peak. This threatens our region as we head into the warmest part of the year and energy use is at its highest. The San Gabriel Valley would like to avoid rolling brown-outs and black-outs experienced 12 years ago and might happen again if SONGS remains closed.
Further, after reviewing the safety measures and procedures of SONGS, the San Gabriel Valley Regional Chamber is confident in the reliability and safety of the facility. For thirty years, Unit 2 has generated clean and safe power for the residents of Southern California. Thanks in part to the safety measures put in place by Southern California Edison, the unit was safely taken down for maintenance. Now that it has been repaired, there is no reason to prevent unit 2 from restarting and regenerating power for our region.
The San Gabriel Valley Regional Chamber represents the business community of the Southeast San Gabriel Valley. Our interests are to advocate for our members and represent the business interests of our region. With this lens, the Chamber believes that the restart of the SONGS unit 2 is.in the interest of the business community of the San Gabriel Valley.
