Dear Senator Boxer:

It is my pleasure to express my strong support to revive the use of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

Today, California relies on nuclear energy for one-fifth of the State'selectricity. The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station provided up to 2,200 megawatts of electricity which equates to about 10% of the peak daily electricity usage in the region. While the station was in operation, it delivered "voltage support" which allowed the grid to import power from regions outside of California and reduce the occurrence of blackouts as well as electricity fluctuations and interruptions. The station also offered "baseloadl l generation by providing power to customers day and night regardless of the weather. These are efforts that cannot be duplicated by other clean power facilities.

Due to the tough, uphill climb out ofthe recession, it is no surprise that companies have been leaving California in search of lower costs to operate their business. Nuclear power is one of the lowest-cost producers of baseload electricity and has a lower production cost than coal or natural gas which helps reduce operating costs for businesses.

Should San Onofre remain offline beyond 2014, Southern California Edison woulp need to consider a combination of other generation resources and/or construction of transmission lines throughout the Los Angeles and Orange County Basin. The multi-year regulatory review and approvals needed for new construction takes time. Businesses in California cannot afford a blow to the critical infrastructure and would greatly benefit from the stability and predictability of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
