Support Safe Restart and Operation of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 2

Dear Senator Feinstein:

On behalf of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce and our more than 650 business members, I am writing to express support for a fair and inclusive regulatory process currently underway for the proposed restart and operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS)

Unit 2.

Southern California Edison's (SCE) SONGS, located near San Clemente, is Southern California's largest and most reliable source of electricity. San Onofre enhances energy security by increasing SCE's generation diversity that also includes solar;wind, geothermal and biomass.

SONGS has produced more than 350 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity since its beginnings in 1.968 - exceeding all other individual poWer, sources in the region. San Onofre offers a number of benefits to the state and the electrical grid. Nuclear energy is virtually free of emissions and is increasingly, important in meeting the state's air quality standards to reduce greenhouse gasses. In addition, San Onoffe has helped avoid-100,000 metric tons of smog producing pollutants and more than 180*

million metric tonsofcarbon-emissions.

SONGS Safe Restart Page 2 November 29, 2012 On October 25, I had the opportunity to address the California Public Utility Commission and comment on the import role SONGS plays in the retention and attraction of businesses to Orange County, California. The business community needs to be reassured that reliable, competitively-priced electricity will be available when needed. To that end, the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce supports comprehensive, coordinated energy policies that will ensure adequate supplies at reasonable prices. These supplies have long included nuclear power as a part of the green energy portfolio.

If SONGS Unit 2 remains offline beyond 2014, SCE would need to consider a combination of other generating resources and/or construction of transmission lines throughout Southern California. The review and approval process for such construction would be lengthy and would put the region at a competitive disadvantage. Getting SONGS back on line as soon as possible is the only long-term solution.
