OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON NOVEMBER 19, 2008, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND PPL SUSQUEHANNA, LLC., CONCERNING THE DRAFT REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THE SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PPL Susquehanna, LLC (PPL), held a telephone conference call on November 19, 2008, to discuss the draft requests for additional information (RAIs), concerning the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, Units 1 and 2, license renewal application (LRA).

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION 11/19/08 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PPL Susquehanna, LLC held a telephone conference call on 11/19/08, to discuss and clarify the following draft request for additional information (RAI) concerning the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES), Units 1 and 2, license renewal application (LRA).

D-RAI 2.3.3.18-1 According to the LRA Section 2.3.3.18, the license renewal system identified as the "Process and Area Radiation Monitoring System" is a combination of two systems identified in the FSAR as the "Process and Effluent Radiological Monitoring and Sampling Systems" and the "Area Radiation Monitoring System". The Process and Effluent Radiological Monitoring System is composed of a number of subsystems that are listed in FSAR Section 11.5.2.1. Of the subsystems in Section 11.5.2.1, only the RHR Service Water Radiological Monitoring System and the Primary Containment Radiation Monitoring System could be identified in the License Renewal Boundary Drawings. The staff requests that the licensee provide additional information identifying which subsystems listed in FSAR Section 11.5.2.1 are in scope for license renewal.

Discussion: The applicant indicated that the question is clear. This D-RAI will be sent as a formal RAI.

D-RAI 2.3.3.18-2 In LRA Section 2.3.3.18 it states that drawing LR-M-178 Sheet 1 depicts the evaluation boundary for components of the "Process and Area Radiation Monitoring System" within scope of license renewal. However, no radiation monitoring components could be located on this sheet. The staff requests that the licensee clarify which components depicted on LR-M-178 Sheet 1 belong to the Process and Area Radiation Monitoring System.

Discussion: The applicant explained that the components on LR-M-178, Sh 1, belongs to the Process and Area Radiation Monitoring System AN07801 and FE07801, shown at coordinates A-10 (in the SGTS Exhaust Vent). These safety related components are in the scope of LR for their pressure boundary function. The air samples obtained via AN07801 and the flow information from FE07801 are processed by the vent stack monitoring systems.

The NRC finds this clarification acceptable and will not be issuing a formal RAI.
