SUBJECT:

SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 -

CORRECTION TO LETTER APPROVING THE USE OF THE PRIVATEL MODEL 960V VALIDATED TO FEDERAL INFORMATION PROCESSING STANDARD (FIPS) 140-1 (TAC NOS. MB5081 AND MB5082)

Dear Mr. Shriver:

By letter dated May 9, 2002, Mr. Robert Byram requested approval in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR), Part 73, Section 73.21(g)(3), for the use of protected telecommunications for the transmission of Safeguards Information at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES), Units 1 and 2, located in Berwick, Pennsylvania, and at your corporate offices located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The letter requested approval for the use of Privatel Model 960v from L-3 Communications as validated to FIPS 140-1.

On June 27, 2002, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff issued a letter approving the use of the subject model in response to your request. However, in an email dated April 14, 2005 (Agency Documents Access and Management System, Accession No. ML051150039), from Mrs. Brenda ORourke of your staff, it was pointed out that the letter was inaccurate in that it stated, the Privatel Model 960v is validated to FIPS 140-2 and is Number 108 on the Cryptographic Modules Validation List. We agree that this was an inaccurate statement. The statement should read, the Privatel Model 960v is validated to FIPS 140-1 and is Number 108 on the Cryptographic Modules Validation List. Only Privatel Model 960v models that incorporate software version 7.10 are validated and, therefore, approved for use. Please update your file to include this correction. We apologize if this error caused you any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

/RA/
