SUMMARY
OF JULY 6, 2009, PUBLIC MEETING WITH PPL SUSQUEHANNA, LLC On July 6, from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm, a public meeting was conducted at the Susquehanna Energy Information Center in Berwick, Pennsylvania, between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and PPL Susquehanna, LLC (PPL). The NRC requested the meeting with PPL management to engage Susquehanna in a discussion regarding the status of the safety conscious work environment (SCWE) at the site.
The NRC and PPL management discussed PPLs plans to preclude a chilled work environment going forward, PPLs plan for further evaluating the health of the SCWE at Susquehanna, SCWE metrics, and the effectiveness of actions taken to date. The NRC presentation included a review of the background that led the NRC to the issuance of a Potential Chilling Effect Letter on January 28, 2009, and NRC inspections that have been performed to date. As part of this meeting, PPL presented a discussion of their progress in addressing the work environment concerns at Susquehanna.
Members of the public, representatives of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and PPL employees observed the meeting. At the end of the meeting between the NRC and PPL, public attendees were offered the opportunity to ask questions. Questions from the public were addressed by the NRC.
