Atlanta, Georgia 30323 CAROLINA POWER & LICHT COMPANY SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR PLANT 1986 - 900,000 KW - UNIT 1 HYLOMAR THREAD SEALANT ITEM 231

Dear Dr. Grace:

On August 14, 1986, CP&L notified the NRC (Mr. L. Mellen) of a potentially reportable item per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).

The NRC was informed that Hylomar Thread Sealant, which has been used in stainless steel applications, was found to exceed acceptable chloride limits.

On September 11, 1986, CP&L submitted a letter (NRC-479) to the NRC stating that testing to determine the effects of Hylomar Thread Sealant was underway at our Harris Energy & Environmental Center laboratories. The testing is required to properly evaluate the potential for stress cracking of stainless steel exposed to Hylomar Sealant due to its high concentration of chlorides. At that time, it was expected that the testing and evaluation of the results would be completed in order that a determination on reportability could be made by September 26, 1986.

The purpose of this update is to inform you that the required testing has not been completed at this time. Therefore, additional time will be required to complete our evaluation of this item. Upon completion of the testing and evaluation of the results, CP&L will be able to determine reportability on this item. It is currently projected that CP&L will report to the NRC on the reportability determination by October 10, 1986.
