O Mr. James P . O'Reilly LER No.83-017 Page Two March 25, 1983 1

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EVENT On March 5, 1983, with the Plant in Mode 1, Remote Information Acquisition Cabinet (RIAC) #7 experienced an electronic component failure and subsequently rendered four (4) smoke detectors in Zone

  1. 3 of the Reactor Building inoperable. The failure of two (2) of' these detectors located in Room 36-01 SE initiated an entry into Action Statement (a) of Technical Specification 3.3.3.7. .

PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES As the Reactor Building air temperature was monitored hourly for the duration of the event, the possibility that any fire remained undetected was minimized.

CAUSE(S) OF THE OCCURRENCE The event is attributed to the failure of a printed circuit card in the electronic circuitry of the RIAC panel.

IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS TAKEN

'Upon detection of the failed smoke detectors, a maintenance work l request was issued to investigate the problem. Action was initiated to record the Reactor Building temperature on an hourly l basis per Action Statement (a) of Technical Specification l

[

3 3.3.7.

I Upon identification of the failed printed circuit card, it was l replaced. The system was reset and returned to operable status within one hour and 50 minutes of the event initiation.

l

! ACTION TAKEN TO PREVENT RECURRENCE

! The licensee considers this event to be an isolated occurrence and plans no further action except for normal surveillance testing.
