Docket No. 50/395 l
Operating License No. NPF-12 Steam Generator Inspection Plan i
Dear Mr. Ebneter:
In a meeting with NRC representatives at Region II Headquarters on March 12, l
1990. South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) presented a steam generator inspection plan for the upcoming outage. The handout and one of j
the overhead slides showed that all tubes in all steam generators would be
'i inspected from the cold leg (outlet) side. This information was incorrect.
1 A corrected slide is attached to clarify the SCE&G current plans.
]
SCE&G had always planned to perform ECT inspection of all tubes in the hot leg tubesheet. area, plus a significant number of full length tube inspections (20-25%) to ensure adequate assessment of the steam generator condition. For scheduling purposes SCE&G initially scheduled the inspection from the cold leg so that other activities could be conducted concurrently in the hot leg.
By performing the inspection in this manner, all tubes would be inspected over their entire length, as presented in the March 12 meeting. As detailed j
outage planning progressed, it was determined that inspectibn from the hot i
leg-(inlet) side was more expeditious and, therefore, the schedule was modified.
In doing this, data which would have been gathered incidental to traversing the tube to access the hot leg tubesheet region (from the cold leg
+
-channel head) was climinated but the originally planned inspeccion scope was
.]
implementable.
Please be assured that SCE&G will complete the originally planned inspection i
scope. That scope includes the following:
1 100% of the hot leg tubesheet region for each steam generator.
23% of the total number of tubes will receive inspections from the hot leg over the U-bend to the top support plate of the cold leg.
