Summer Nuclear Station (VCSNS) Response to Generic Letter 97 01 submitted June 30,1997 and requested that the additional information be provided by December 7,1998. The RAI pertains to the Westinghouse Owner's Group (WOG) integrated program for assessing reactor vessel head penetration (RVHP) nozzles at WOG member plants and to the contents of Topical Report No. WCAP 14901 as it relates to the response lD

' response being developed by the EPRI Materials Reliability Project (MRP) Alloy 600 Issue Task Group (ITG) for voluntary use by licensees.

r The ITG was formed with the intent to tie together the efforts of the various owner's groups into one industry approach to the management and resolution of the CRDM reactor vessel i head penetration degradation issue. The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) is coordinating this effort and is the principalinterface with the NRC.

The generic ITG response will not be complete until early January,1999. This generic  !

response will not be completed in time for SCE&G's response which is currently due by December 7,1998. However, the NRC has stated that they prefer licensees to use generic responses when possible. NEl has communicated to licensees that the NRC has indicated a willingness to agree with an extension of the response period to January 15,1999, if {

required. NEl has advised these licensees to request extension of response due dates. '

As SCE&G is participating in the ITG effort and intends to utilize the industry generic RAI response, we request an extension of the response period to January 15,1999, for VCSNS.
