NRC Docket No. 50-237/249 Reference (a): J. G. Keppler letter to Cordell Reed dated May 12, 1980.

(b): T. J. Rausch letter to J. G. Keppler dated January 23, 1981.

(d): E. D. Swartz letter to J.-G. Keppler dated October 28, 1982.

Dear Mr. Keppler:

Reference (a) transmitted I.E.Bulletin 80-13, which identified

-instances of cracking in Core Spray Spargers at BWR facilities. On January 19, 1983, we conducted an inspection of both the upper and lower core spray spargers on our Dresden Unit 2. No abnormalities were noted.

This Unit 2 inspection completes the third inspection of Core Spray Spargers at our Dresden Nuclear Station (previous inspections were Unit 2-1981, Unit 3-1982). No evidence of cracking was identified during during the conduct of the above described inspections. Due to favorable results, and the fact that one day of critical path time in the refueling outage schedule-is required to perform each inspection, it is our belief that the frequency of'these inspections should be reduced.

.c J. G. Keppler March 25, 1983 It is Commonwealth Edison's request that the Core Spray Sparger inspection program be performed every three (3) years in conjunction with the reactor vessel internal inspection required by our ISI program (ASME Section XI) in lieu of I.E.Bulletin 80-13. We have made a similar request for relief for Quad Cities Station Units 1 and 2 (Reference (d)).

We would like a written response accepting or rejecting this request.

Please address any questions you many have concerning this matter to this office.

Very truly yours,

)
