Report No.: 50-278-74-7 Report Date: September 19, 1974 Occurrence Date: September 18, 1974 Facility: Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station R.D. 1, Delta, Pennsylvania 17314 l

Identification of Occurrence:

Ground fault in 3B RHR pu=p motor.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Maintenance outage in progress. Reactor shutdown.

Description of Occurrence:

The "B" RHR pump was being started in the shutdown cooling mode. As the motor was energized, it innediately tripped on inacantaneous overcurrent.

Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

Cause of occurrence unknown at this time.

j Analysis of Occurrence:

The motor breaker tripped upon energiration of the motor. The pump was to be used in.the shutdown cooling mode to cool the reactor to 150'F. Decay heat at this time in core life is small and one of the other three 101R pumps was used for this servic e. There is no safety significance associated with this failure.

l Corrective Action

  • l The notor leais were disconnected and electrical testing indicated that the protective instrumentation had operated properly. There was a low resistance between phase and ground on the cotor. *ihe defective motor is being removed and sources for replacement motors and repair are being investigated.
