Description of Occurrence:

.h During a reactor shutdown operation, a small steam leak was noted coning from the 'rG rNf shaft seal of the HPCI turbine. During the investigation and repair of the shaft '

seal, the HPCI bearing was found to be defectivs. A score nark was also found '

on the shaft in the vicinity of the bearing.

Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence: -

Under investigation.

Analysis of Occurrence:

The HPCI system was sucessfully operated during the plant loss of power testing on 9/17/74. The defective bearing did not prevent the system from perforuing its design function. This occurrence, therefore, has minical safety significance.

Corrective Action:

Disassembly of the turbine is progressing. Final corrective action has not been datermined at thin time.
