Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On March 24, 1982, the NRC (Mr. C. Julian) was informed that the subject item was considered potentially reportable per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR21. The intent of this letter is to inform you that due to difficulties in gaining access for engineering examinations and other pressing priorities, we have not been able to complete our reportability evaluation.

To date, three (3) of the ten (10) (Note: Initial notification incorrectly indicated there were nine (9) vessels) heat exchanger vessels have been examined. CP&L welding engineering personnel will continue to examine the remaining welds to determine the extent of the deficiencies. CP&L plant

engineering personnel will determine whether or not these. deficiencies are reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR21. It is anticipated that the investigation and evaluation of this problem will be completed by June 11, 1982, at which time the NRC will be informed 'of the results of our evaluation.

Completion of corrective action will depend on the results of the evaluation and extent of rework required. If this item is deemed reportable, the NRC will be so notified and the projected date of completion of corrective action
