Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-410 License No. NPF 29 Makeup Flow from a Control Red Drive Housing Failure at Cold Stutdown AECM-87/0068 Reference- 1) MP&L letter to the NRC dated June 29, 1984 (AECH-84/0335)

2) MP&L letter to the NRC dated July 14, 1986 (AECM-86/0186) j
3) NRC letter to MP&L dated October 6, 1986 (MAEC-86/0332)

The purpose of this letter is to document information provided to members of your staff in conversations regarding Inservice Inspection Relief Report I-00008 (Reference 2). This information pertained to a postulated complete through the wall circumferential fracture of one Control Rod Drive (CRD)

Housing and the normal makeup capacity available due to this failure at or near 1 cold shutdown. )

Analyses were performed for cold shutdcwn to determine if a CRD pump can supply normal makeup water to the Reactor Pressure Vessel due to a postulated CRD Heusing failure. The cone.lusion is that a CRD pump can supply normal ' makeup inventory due to a postulated failure.

Tweboundingevaluationswerethgbasesfortheaboveconclusion'. One evaluation assumed the reactor at 200 F and at ambient pressure. This resulted in a total leakage flow of 135 gpm. Vendor certified pump curves show that a I single CR0 pump at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) will supply 200 gpm at dis::harge pressures above 1500 psig, i l

The second case assumed the reactor e.t 200 psi and at a temperature of i U

380 F. This resulted in a total calculated flow of 195 gpm. As noted above certified vendor pump curves show that the CRD pump capscity 1s 200 gpm at pump discharge pressures above 1500 psig. This is a conservative evaluation since Reactor Core Isclation Cooling (RCIC) is available for full rated pump capacity )

at steam pressures down to 165 psi.

  • AECM-87/0068 Page 2 In summary a single CRD pump can make up the inventory loss caused by a
  • single CRD housing failure at GGNS. This conclusion is applicable for conditions at or near cold shutdown where the .1CIC system could not be used for inventory make up.

In accordance with the requirements of 10CFd170.21, an application fee of

$150 is attached to this letter. If additional nformation is required, i please contact this office. I l

Yours truly, l O .
