Dear Mr. Denton:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-29 File: 0260/L-860.0 AC Power Reliability AECM-84/0491 In a letter to the NRC dated February 26, 1984 (AECM-84/0113), MP&L made a commitment concerning the submittal of a limited risk assessment for the loss of AC power at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS). This commitment was made as part of a larger overall effort to address the adequacy of the Transamerica Delaval, Inc. (TDI) diesel engines and to expedite the issuance of a full power license for GGNS. This overall effort did not include a detailed inspection of the TDI engines. However, prior to obtaining a full power license MP&L was required to tear down and inspect the Division I diesel engine, and review the Division 11 diesel engine's QA records to verify that the engines were essentially identical. Also, MP&L had previously, voluntarily placed three gas turbine generators onsite. MP&L believes that with the requirement to inspect the diesel generators the original intent for submitting a report to the NRC was removed and, therefore, this commitment is withdrawn.

Yours truly, 0 [
