STEAM BINDING OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER (AFW) PUMPS The District has developed and implemented procedures for monitoring the fluid conditions within the AFW system to identify steam binding and for restoring the AFW system to operable status should steam binding occur. These procedures were requested in IE Bulletin 85-01.

The procedure for monitoring the fluid conditions is a portion of surveillance procedure 200.01. This procedure requires the touching of the pipes leading from auxiliary feed pumps P-318 and P-319 on a per shift basis. This revision was effective as of February 2, 1986. Specific training is not required for this procedure change.

The procedure for restoring the AFW system to operable status should steam binding occur, is a portion of the AFW system operating procedure, A.51. This revision was effective on January 13, 1986. Training on this procedure will be completed by March 14, 1986.

The Rancho Seco AFW system has been designed to minimize the likelihood of steam binding. The procedures developed formalize existing District practice to further reduce the possibility of steam binding rendering the AFW system inoperable.
