July 7,1999 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn.: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Docket No. 50-312 Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station License No. DPR-54 RANCIIO SECO DECOMMISSIONING SCIIEDULE CIIANGE Attn.: Dick Dudley In accordance with 10 CFR 50.82(a)(7), we are informing the NRC of a change to the Rancho Seco decommissioning schedule as described in our Post Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report (PSDAR).

In a letter dated January 29,1997, we informed the NRC of our intention to begin

" incremental decommissioning" at Rancho Seco. We expected incremental decommissioning to continue for approximately three years; however, due to its success, l

SMUD has decided to forego Hardened-SAFSTOR and proceed with full plant l

dismantlement. We will continue to conduct all decommissioning activities in accordance l

with 10 CFR 50.59.

i Our basic schedule is to continue with plant dismantlement and complete the cite termination survey by 2008. We are currently updating our PSDAR to provide more O

l detail on our decommissioning schedule and to discuss the environmental impacts associated with full plant decommissioning.
