I'r. harold L. Price Director of Regulation Atonic Enercy Commission !
Hashington 25, D. C. !
Dear l'r. Price:
On January 28 I sent a letter to Mr. Udall, Secretary of. the Interior, call- ;
ing his attention to geological-investigations-being conducted in the Bodega area. I called Secretary Udall's attention to the implications of the prelimin- )
ary data we had obtainod at that time, and suggested that the AI:C hearing on the proposed 3odega reactor be postponed until this study is completed. . Copies of this letter were sent to the Reactor Safeguards Committee of the AEC and:to_ the.
PGLC.
Since January we have coraplete'd about 150 miles of sonoprobe lines in Tomales 3ay. These lines. indicate some amazingly complex subsurface structure,. -
l but further interpretation will require cores of the sediments in critical areas.-
Ue plan to obtain these cores in the near future. Also,.a sonoprobe survey of l Bodega Bay will'be undertaken by a Scripps Institution of Oceanography vessel {
1ator this year, as well as additional offshore arcer lines by:a larger Scripps vessel to complement the earlier arcer lines. !
These studios will provide more objectivo data than now exists about the Coological structure of the Bodega area. The data already in hand suggests that-the so_ called fault zone in this area is much broader and more complex than existing conceptions of it based on conventional geoloCical data, and'that current thinking on potential seismic activity by representatives of your office and of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company may be academic.'
i Recent statements in the press attributed to an "A.E.C. spokesman" that seem .
to imply that the A100 may neA be interest M in the objective data of geology are, ,
f I hopo, incorrect. The Atomic Energy Corr.ission would be derclict in its ' duty '
I if it attempts to judge this compicx matter without considering what may be the most significant and relevant information. The data is freely available to mem-V JF bers of the U. S. Geological Survey. We anticipate nere complate information on U $ $
