Dear Mr. Denton:

Io support your review of the GPC request to eliminate from design con-sideration the dynamic effects of the postulated pipe breaks in the reactor coolant system main loop piping, we have prepared a summary of the status of the installation of the whip restraints and jet barriers associated with those breaks. The following identifies the physical status of the restraints, and the construction impacts associated with the completion of the installation, and defines the status of the jet impingement barriers.

RCS PIPE WHIP RESTRAINTS INSTALLATION STATUS (Unit 1) e Crossover Leg Horizontal Run Restraints (8 total)

The support structure has been installed in each loop. The bearing surface and its attachments to the RCS piping have not been installed.

Installation at this stage of construction will require restraint portions not yet installed to be cut, installed, and rewelded.

e Crossover Leg Vertical Run Restraints (4 total)

Only the embeds have been installed.

e Steam Generator Inlet (Hot Leg) Restraints (4 total)

Only the embeds have been installed. Several installation inter-ferences exist which may have to be relocated to allow restraint installation.

Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation File: 17N0.06 December 21, 1984 -Log: GN-501 Page 2 e Hot Leg Primary Shield Wall Restraints (4 total)

Installation complete except for bearing bars.

e Cold Leg Primary Shield Wall Restraints (4 total)

Installation complete except for bearing bars.

RCS PIPE WHIP RESTRAINTS INSTALLATION STATUS (Unit 2) e Crossover Leg Horizontal Run Restraints (8 total)

Same as Unit 1.

e All Other RCS Restraints (16 total)

Only the embeds have been installed. Interferences identified for Unit 1 are also applicable to Unit 2.

RCS JET IMPINGEMENT BARRIERS INSTALLATION STATUS (Units 1 and 2)

Approximately 180 essential impactees have been identified for the 28 postulated RCS breaks. Jet loads on these targets have been calculated, but not yet evaluated. No barriers have been identified or installed to date. Expected number of barriers is estimated to be 15 to 25.
