Dear Mr. Giambusso:

SUBJECT:

Abnormal Occurrence 4 ' . W/

The following occurrence was reported by telephone to -

Mr. Walter Martin, A.E.C., Region I Regulatory Operations Office on Februa ry 15, 1974. Written notification was made to Mr. James P. O'Reilly A.E.C. Region I Regulatory Operations Office on February 19, 1974. In accordance with Section 3,4.C.1 of the Technical Specifications, Appendix A of DPR-44 for Unit 2 Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, the following report is being submitted to the Directorate of Licensing as an Abnormal Occurrence.

Reference:

License Number DPR-44, Amendment Number 1, Appendix A revised October 1973 Technical Specification Section 3.4.C.1 Report No.: 50-277-74-4 Report Date: 2/2/74 Occurrence Date: 2/15/74 Facility: Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station - Unit 2 R.D. #1, Del ta, Pennsylvania 17314 Identi fication of Occurrence:

Mr* A. Giambusso-Abnormal Occurrence Februa ry 27, 1974 Page 2 Condi tions Prior to Occurrence:

The reactor was at 8% power at 940 psig.

Description of Occurrence:

Monthly surveillance test : determined ' that' sodium pentaborate i concentration was 12.9%. With the inventory in the tank at that time i a 13 2% concentration was required by Technical Specification Figure 3.4.1.

Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

Reduction in volume of solution in control tank due to surveillance test of the standby liquid control pumps over the last few months. During surveillance test of the pumps, small volumes of the sodium pentaborate solution trapped in the pump suction piping is discarded to permit running the pump with demineralized water. Over a long period of time enough solution has been removed to result in a .

minor deviati~on below the volume-concentration specification curve.

Analysis of Occurrence:

The quantity of pentaborate solution stored in the standby liquid control tank provides an additional 25% margin beyond the amount needed to shutdown the reactor. This minor deviation from the required Technical Specification concentration has no safety implications.

Corrective Action:

Additional chemicals were added to the standby liquid control system tank to return the sodium pentaborate concentration to within the permissible envelope within 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
. Sufficient concentration will be maintained to ensure performance of operability tests does not result in a change in pentaborate concentration-volume outside the acceptable envelope.
