4. Identifictition o f Occurrence:

A niomass of fish and shellfish impinged on the intake screens of Units 1, 2 and 3 exceeded the 50 kg/24hr reporting level of section 3.1.3 of the Environmental Technical Specifications.

5. Conditions Prior to Occurrence: ,

Unit #1 - All water circulation pumps operationa.

Unit #2 - One of four water circulation pumps non-operational (1 hour1.157407e-5 days <br />2.777778e-4 hours <br />1.653439e-6 weeks <br />3.805e-7 months <br />).

" Unit #3 - All water circulation pumps operational.

6. Description of Occurrence:

During the period 0900 June 13,1977 to 09'00 June 14,1977 84.08 kg of fish and shellfish were impinged on the intake 1 -

screens of Crystal River Units 1, 2 and 3. Of the 84.08 kg ,

impinged, Unit 3 accounted for 38.78 kg (46% of total). One commercially unimportant species, the batfish accounted for 75.57 kg (90% of total). Two commercially utilized species, the pink shrimp and the blue crab accounted for 5.67 kg (7% of total). Impingement of all other commercially utilized species was less than.1 kg during the period in question. The remaining biomass impinged was distributed a_.ng several specier of fish and shellfish.

7. Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

The following unusual or periodic events were noted prior to or during the occurrence:

1. One oil barge entered the intake canal at 1445' on 6/13/77 and left at 0825 on 6/14/77.
2. A dredge performing canal maintenance entered the intake canal at 1550 on 6/13/77 and left at 2020 on 6/13/77.

These events may have been par'ially responsib1'e for the impingement obse rved.
