Facility:

Crystal River Unit #3 3.

Report Date:

8 August 1977 4

4.

Occurrence Date:

15 July 1977 5.

Identification of Occurrence:

The Reactor Building charcoal efficiency was less than 99% methyl Iodine removal contrary to Technical Specification 3.6.4.2.

6.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Mode 1 power operation 7.

Description of Occurrence:

At 1000 when performing the normal testing sequence of charcoal filter bank AHFL-1, f

the methyl Iodine removal efficiency was determined to be less than 99%. The 30 day action statement of Technical Specification 3.6.4.2 was entered. The charcoal was renewed on 6 August 1977 and will be restored operable upon final testing.

8.

Designation of Apparent Cause:

The flue gases and other site airborne pollutants deteriorate the charcoal and its impregnant.

9.

Analysis of Occurrence:

There was no safety hazard to the plant or public.
