SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION (cont'd) ,

Designation of Apparent Cause:

Mo]t of the analyses were performed before or during the period of the initial corrective cetions on the LLD problem. As such, marked improve nent was not expected. Higher than normal LLD's can result from natural activity in a sample.

Analysis of Occ.urrence:

Thura are a total of 223 nuclides whose LLD's were greater than those required. Of thssa,195 nuclides were either non-detectable or had concentrations below the pre:-

opsrational 95% (percentile) concentrations. Another 26 were in control stations cutoide the influence of the plant, or were not in a critical environmental pathway.

Thsra were 2 nuclides whose LLD's were greater than those required and whose con-centrations were greater chan the preoperational 95 percentile level; however, the concentrations vers less than the reporting level requiretnents of Specification 5.6.2.C.2.

Corractive Action:

Analysis procedures are being revised to obtain larger samples and to count them for longer periods of time in order to reduce the sampic LLD's. Ultimate LLD's (non- .

radionuclide specific) and backgrotand LLD's (radionuclide specific but no sample interferences) are being, determined for the analysis systec:. The comparison of these LLd's to the ETS required LLD's may point out areas requiring further refinement in the enalysis syste=.
